Nutritional Support to Help Treat Disease
What you eat can have a big impact on your health and can even play a role in helping to treat certain diseases. An outpatient service called Medical Nutrition Therapy, or MNT, is now available at Northwest Texas Healthcare System for patients who are managing conditions such as obesity, malnutrition, renal disease, heart disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), cancer and more. This therapy is provided by registered, licensed dietitians. It involves making a full health assessment of each patient, and then determining a diagnosis and individualized plan of care.
Take the Next Step
Insurance may cover nutritional services for patients with certain health conditions, with a physician’s referral. If you think you might benefit from MNT, talk with your doctor and check with your insurance. To schedule an appointment with a Northwest dietitian, call 806-354-1701.
Get the Facts About Kids and Heart Health
As student athletes took to the fields this season it was important to make sure they were healthy enough to get in the game. To help do just that, The Heart Hospital at Northwest held an Athletic Health Fair to provide physicals and a cardiac screening for kids ages 14 to 18.
Stay in the know when it comes to kids and heart health. Consider the following:
- The heart is physically immature until the age of 14
- High school athletes are pushed to a higher level of exertion, putting more stress on the heart
- Underlying heart abnormalities may go undetected without the presence of symptoms
Keep in mind that the required sports physical exam may not be enough. When active teenagers appear healthy, some symptoms may be overlooked. If you were unable to attend the Athletic Health Fair, ask your child’s doctor about a cardiac screening.
