Outpatient Nutrition Counseling
Northwest Texas Healthcare System offers medical nutrition therapy (MNT) – also known as outpatient nutrition counseling – from a registered and licensed dietitian. We can help treat conditions such as malnutrition, kidney disease, diabetes, and many others. These services can be covered by insurance with a physician order and are also available for patients out-of-pocket without a physician order.

What is MNT?
Medical nutrition therapy is an approach to the treatment and management of medical diagnoses through the adaptation of a diet that is devised and monitored by a registered dietitian.
What is a registered dietitian?
Registered dietitians are medical professionals who have completed secondary schooling as well as 1,200+ hours of supervised practice in inpatient and outpatient settings. Registered dietitians are required to take a board exam to obtain their credentials, and are considered the most reliable source of evidenced-based nutrition recommendations.
What disease states can the dietitians at NWTHS assess?
Our outpatient dietitian team is diverse in their backgrounds and practice. Our registered dietitians assess and treat patients of all age groups, from infants to the elderly, and are educated and trained in diagnoses including:
- Malnutrition

- Chronic or end-stage kidney disease
- Diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational)
- Wound care nutrition

What should you expect to receive from outpatient nutrition counseling?
Our registered dietitians will perform a thorough assessment of your past medical and nutritional history, weight changes, and any lab values available from recent doctor visits. We will learn about your habits and struggles, and devise a plan of care to address your most pressing issues with monitoring and evaluation of your progress towards an end goal.
