An Interdisciplinary Approach to Neurological Treatment
More than 5,500 patients come to the Northwest Texas Healthcare System Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery each year for comprehensive care from experts in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology. The team treats neurological problems from chronic back pain and sleep disorders to rare brain tumors. The department's emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration helps create a seamless integration of services. The department includes 11 centers, each with its own approach to finding innovative ways to care for patients.
Neurological Testing
The neurophysiological testing capabilities available at the Neuroscience Department benefit patients with numerous neurological conditions. Services include quantitative EEG, continuous EEG monitoring with video for seizures, continuous neurological monitoring and monitoring of visual, auditory, somatosensory, and cognitive function.
The Neuroscience Department offers specialized neurophysiological monitoring during cranial surgery to gain critical information about patient status. By recording electrical signals at different levels of the neuraxis or at different muscle groups, caregivers can detect adverse changes before complications arise. Surgeons can then use this information to alter the surgical technique in an attempt to prevent neurological deficits.
The StealthStation™ S8 Surgical Navigation System
Northwest Texas Healthcare System is the first in the region to perform neurosurgery procedures using the StealthStation™ S8, a surgical navigation system designed to help surgeons perform more accurate procedures in the operating room. The system offers the most advanced version of Stealth™ technology – a combination of medical-grade hardware, software and specialized instruments – for neurosurgery and spine procedures.
Computer-based surgical navigation solutions have been used as a tool by doctors in operating rooms for many years. Surgical navigation is key to offering enriched visual and quantified information to a surgeon during neurosurgery for accurate tool localization and possible avoidance of key anatomical areas of the brain.
