The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas Healthcare System Recognized for 200th Impella Procedure
The Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas Healthcare System has been recognized by Abiomed for its achievement of 200 Impella procedures, a milestone on a journey which began March 25, 2011. This life-changing procedure has affected residents of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, Southwestern Kansas and Western New Mexico communities. In partnership with local cardiologists, The Heart Hospital continues to change and improve lives.
What is Impella?
Impella allows the heart to rest and recover after a significant cardiac event, such as a heart attack, by temporarily assisting the pumping function of the heart to efficiently deliver blood and oxygen to the entire body. Protected Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) with Impella ensures blood flow is maintained to critical organs enabling the physician to perform a complete and optimized procedure, decreasing the likelihood of repeat procedures and multiple hospital stays.
Impella is the only U.S. FDA-approved percutaneous heart pump technology indicated for patients with severe coronary artery disease requiring high-risk PCI or Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) cardiogenic shock.
In a randomized controlled trial, 8 in 10 patients treated with Impella heart pumps experienced reduction in heart failure symptoms or improvement in heart function. “The recognition for this achievement is more about the number of lives that have been changed for patients and their families. Our goal is to continue to impact lives,” states Raul Bocanegra, MAA, CCC, RCP-Cardiovascular Director.
